What should I name my guinea pig?
Coming up with a cute guinea pig name can be tough. There are so many to choose from.
First, we started out by watching our guinea pigs during floor time and thinking about their unique personality, colors and markings.
Next, we thought about all of the characteristics that make guinea pigs unique:
- Guinea pigs enjoy floor time and often run around in circles. This is often referred to as ZOOMIES and it is fun to watch.
- Guinea pigs ears are said to look like flower petals. Do any flower names come to mind?
- Guinea pigs can get really excited and may even jump up in the air. This is called “pop-corning”. Has your guinea pig showed off his pop-corning skills yet?
- Guinea pigs are sometimes referred to as furry potatoes or squeaky loafs.
- Guinea pigs come in many different color combinations and oftentimes have markings or hairstyles that make them unique.

Can guinea pigs learn their names?
I was surprised to learn how SMART guinea pigs are!
Growing up on a farm in Iowa, I have experience with lots of different animals such as: horses, pigs, cows, sheep, cats, dogs and even hamsters.
However, I have never owned a guinea pig.
Actually, I have owned a guinea pig, but only for about 2 hours.
When I was nine years old, my grandma took me shopping at a pet store and I was so excited to bring home a guinea pig.
Guess who was NOT happy?
My mom.
She made us take it right back to the pet store. 🙁
Lesson learned: make sure you check with your parents BEFORE bringing home a pet.
So when my kids begged and pleaded for a guinea pig as a pet, I had no idea what to expect.
I am surprised at how much I really enjoy them. They are sweet, social balls of fur who are fun to watch and play with AND they are super smart.
Our guinea pigs are starting to learn their names. While they don’t come when called…yet…they do respond when we sit on the floor with them and talk to them.
We have read that the best way to train your guinea pig to learn his name is the following:
- Choose a short name that is easy to say.
- Work with your guinea pig one on one.
- Sit on the floor with your guinea pig and say his name repeatedly.
- Reward him with a treat when he comes over to you.
And lastly, be consistent and patient.

We get our guinea pigs out at least once a day to sit and play with them on the floor. This is when we do our “training” sessions.

We named the three little girl guinea pigs Moose, Moon and Aspen.

Well, we thought SHE was a HE at first so we decided to keep her name. It fits her perfect!
We named our little boy guinea pig Finnagin or Finn, for short.
